MBW Soil Pick

The Soil Pick™ is a selective excavator that effectively fractures, pulverizes, and displaces porous and semi-porous soils while leaving non-porous objects untouched. This tool allows for soil excavation without the risk of damaging buried utilities.

The Soil Pick utilizes converging/diverging nozzle technology to propel compressed air at supersonic speeds, reaching up to 1,475 mph. The high-velocity air stream travels approximately 4 inches from the tip of the Soil Pick—referred to as “the cutting edge”—before decompressing to atmospheric pressure with enough force to pulverize and displace soil.

What distinguishes the MBW Soil Pick from other excavation tools using converging/diverging nozzle technology is safety. MBW holds U.S. and international patents for the combination of dielectric and non-sparking features found in the Soil Pick. Non-conductive, non-sparking tools are essential for professionals working in potentially gas-enriched environments and near live electrical lines.

For safety reasons, MBW standardizes the Soil Pick's cutting edge to approximately 4 inches. This length strikes a balance between facilitating rapid excavation and minimizing the risk of personal injury due to misdirected cutting. The operator can also maintain better control of the air stream when excavating in the vicinity of a gas leak.

The Soil Pick features a non-sparking brass nozzle that weighs 4.2 ounces. It is crucial that the nozzle remains securely attached to the barrel to avoid becoming a high-velocity projectile. To ensure this, the nozzle is threaded into the Soil Pick’s barrel and secured with Hydraulic Loctite. Unlike some manufacturers that promote easily exchangeable nozzles, MBW prioritizes safety.

A pressure gauge on the handle assembly informs the operator whether the tool is functioning within acceptable pressure levels. Weighing 6.2 lbs., the Soil Pick has zero hand/arm vibration and can be used for extended periods without causing fatigue.

Radial trenching is an increasingly popular technique in the arboreal industry. The Soil Pick is used to safely remove and replace compacted soil that can suffocate tree roots, making it a standard tool in the arboreal market. Choose to decompact today or face decomposition tomorrow.
